Alex Nguyen Abrams, PhD

Dr Alex Abrams, who is English and Vietnamese by background, is a postdoctoral researcher at TMRC. He works to advance talaromycosis screening by engaging policymakers and healthcare systems, combining implementation science with stakeholder engagement to build the evidence and relationships needed for clinical adoption.

Alex completed a PhD at Newcastle University in early-stage antibiotic discovery (2025) after receiving degrees in Biochemistry from the University of York, UK. But working in antimicrobial resistance, Alex observed that researchers were doing important work whilst largely isolated from the global health context they were operating in. This gap drove him to develop his skills beyond the lab, spending time at internships with The Association of Medical Research Charities (London, UK) and a UK government policy consultancy.

Alex joined TMRC in April 2026 to contribute his passion for policy and engagement towards the mission of alleviating talaromycosis and other neglected fungal diseases in Vietnam.
